Today it is time for some shameless self-promotion. Back in 2019 I jumped into something I feared for a long time. Making a WordPress plugin to publish on the public WordPress plugin repository. The result? A plugin called “Category Listing for WooCommerce”.
You can kindly ignore this post if it is nothing for you. But, if you are interested in how I built my first WP plugin? Then this post is a good starting point.
Managing an online store can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to organizing products and categories. The default WooCommerce display merges both categories and products in the same list. That makes it difficult for users to differentiate between the two. This is where the “Category Listing for WooCommerce” plugin comes to the rescue.
The “Category Listing for WooCommerce” plugin is designed to improve user-experience for your WooCommerce store. It does so by separating product categories and products into two distinct lists. This makes it easier for your customers to navigate your store and find the products they are looking for.
The plugin is available in English, German, Spanish, Danish, and Russian. The plugin comes with a POT file included for easy translation using Poedit, WPML, or Polylang. It has been tested and proven compatible with the Storefront theme by Automattic.
The plugin creates a separate listing for categories, displaying them above the product list on archive pages. This makes it easier for customers to understand what a category is and what is a product, improving overall user experience.
Installing the “Category Listing for WooCommerce” plugin is a breeze. Simply upload the plugin to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory or install it through the Plugins and Add New section in the WordPress Dashboard. Activate the plugin through the Plugins menu in WordPress, and you’re good to go. There are no settings to deal with.
The plugin is compatible with WordPress 5.0 or higher, PHP 7.1 or higher, and has been tested with WooCommerce up to version 6.2. This ensures that your online store runs smoothly without any compatibility issues.
I am committed to keeping the plugin updated and compatible with the latest versions of WordPress and WooCommerce. As it is my first and only WordPress Plugin, I intent to keep it alive!
The “Category Listing for WooCommerce” plugin has received positive reviews from users who have found it useful in organizing their online stores. One user praised the plugin for solving the messy and confusing default WooCommerce display, while another appreciated the simple yet effective functionality of separating categories from products. But honestly, at this point it only has two reviews (but both are 5 stars!)
The Category Listing for WooCommerce is worth a try for you, who is looking to enhance your store’s organization and user experience. It has a simple installation and compatibility with various languages and themes make it an effective solution.
Give it a try and see the difference it can make in your WooCommerce store today!
